Manoos Vs Marathi Manoos-2

I was in grade 9 and we used to have a history teacher, Mishra Maa'm. One day, while discussing the concept of British India and Princely states, she digressed a little and exclaimed, "Just look, we have a 'rashtra' within 'rashtra' and that too 'maha'rashtra! " Thackreys are known to take this too seriously. What Raj Thackery is saying now has been the bread and butter statement of the senior one, Bal Thackery since the formation of Shiv Sena in 1966.

Ever thought why this sudden spurt of statements and speeches about North Indians Vs Marathi Manoos? The answer lies in the identity crisis that MNS is facing not only in Maharashtra but even in Mumbai. With much fanfare Raj Thackery defected from Shiv Sena. This when Bal T. continued the great tradition of Indian politics by naming his little known and almost politically inactive/unknown (till that time) son Uddhav T as his successor and not the popular nephew Raj T. With no power and no mood to work at grass root level and with goons at various party positions, nothing happened for MNS. Many Shiv Sainiks who became part of MNS after the defection went back to the parent organisation in a matter of months and then the masses just accepted it as a small regional outfit somewhere between Congress, BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. Subsequent By-elections told the same story. This marathi Manoos drama is just to make his presence felt by Raj T.

The basic ideology behind this call of 'North Indian's,Quit Maharashtra' call is so trash that even writing a blog on it seems like a waste of time. The notion that a particular city belongs to its natives and the people from other states or regions cannot work in that city is against the very essence of our Constitution and the concept of our national unity. Our Constitution has given the right to every citizen to work and earn living anywhere in the country. According to Mr Raj T, all North Indians should leave Maharashtra as they are eating up jobs of the native Marathis. Now, does that mean all Marathi Manoos all over the world leave their jobs and go back to Maharashtra as certainly they are also eating up somebody's job in their respective part of the world? Call Centres in Maharashtra should follow the same fate? In fact all those who are working abroad should be beaten and dragged on street (as MNS guys did to a few taxi drivers and street vendors) as they are taking jobs of natives? I am sorry Mr Raj, we live in a more civilised society.

And it would be interesting to see his dictum for the marathis who are settled in North India but are currently working in various IT companies in Mumbai/Pune? Do they need to go back too or will they get the benefit of doubt? Divide and Rule worked in 18th century but hopefully it wont work now. Even after spitting so much venom, Mumbai largely remained calm. Literate and employed people understand this gutter politics better but unfortunately these politicians, as always, underestimate common man's wisdom.

In a time when India is getting polarised with each passing day, where on the same page of a newspaper you can read mob lynching a person and Indra Nooyi being named among 10 best CEOs, nobody is ready to work to bring these two poles together. Not that anything is expected from outfits like MNS and Shiv Sena. They should stick to their basic principles namely tearing Valentine's day cards, digging cricket pitches and slapping the hapless taxi driver from UP.

Cheers!

  1. Nice post. By the way, Raj T never said that north indians should go back. What he says is they should get mixed with mumbai's culture instead of capturing the city, the way Gujaratis, Punjabis (who are staying here since ages)have got mixed up here. Gujarat's leaders never came in Mumbai and interefered in maharashtra's politics but if you observe leaders from UP come to mumbai and try interfere here which is not right. Tomorrow if any minister or leader from maharashtra go to U.P. or Bihar and try to show their power , will UPites Biharites tolerate that? Tell me honestly.

  3. Mr Anonymous 2, even I condemn on wht the junior Thakarey is doin! But lets not forget that before he started uttering this crap.... people from all over the country were staying in peace in this state! So... just think before you comment on people from this state.

And Gaurav... Maharshtra is not a 'rashtra' within a 'rashtra'as ur teacher said.
Its derived from the chariot riders from this region in ancient times.... Maharathis or Marathis and from the language that was spoken in this region... the Maharashtri Prakrit ..... hence the name Maharashtra! (I guess history teachers should be taught before they teach kids)

And by the way.... I am a Maharashtrian!

  4. who is a teacher and who is a kid will be known who stands the test of time...but in the meanwhile i wud like to ask Anonymous 1, what gyaan are you trying to give by imparting classes on history of Raj T,and how did the name of Maharashtra evolved. Where were all these people and thoughts a couple of years ago...how come on one fine day one came up wid the notion of marathi manoos and the so called concept...as Mr Gaurav S Rathore has aptly put in..its nothing but an knee-jerk reaction on the identity crisis that some people are facing...

  5. Comments and the blog in itself shows that there is polarization in our country. So, all gyaan that the blogger is giving in itself questions his patriotism.

    Long live India !!

  6. By far, Maharashtra is the most peaceful state in our country. Marathis are very friendly and god fearing. I am a Punjabi Sikh and never faced any identity crisis or other problems in the state, which I could have otherwise faced in Southern India or other parts of North India. My dad migrated from Punjab to Maharashtra as there were immense business opportunities in this state. And, credit goes to politicians in this state. These are some seasoned politicians who foresee business opportunities and allow industrialization. Corruption is everywhere, but politicians here do not trouble you personally (Politicians are much peaceful & standard here, unlike UP, Bihar, Punjab etc). I am a born Maharashtrian and proud to be one. Maharashtra is the richest state in our country and Indians should accept this truth. Take Mumbai apart; Maharashtra still has Pune, Thane, Nasik, Konkan, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Nagpur. Nowhere else you see these many developed cities. So please, spare Maharashtra !!!

  7. The solution to this problem is possible only when states like UP & Bihar start progressing.

The basic question is why people from North India (UP-Bihar) are forced to relocate to any other state for basic needs like food & shelter? India’s progress is not possible without balanced progress of all the states.

Raj T has a valid point but unfortunately UP-Bihar people are making issue and they are not ready to accept that their own politicians are cheating with them from last many years.

  8. Raj has a very valid point...You are FIRST a fmaily, then a community, then a village/town / city then an Indian ...like it or not this is the natural fabricof society (Govt ofcourse would want u to believe in the reverse...after all who will give up their lives in war but for this belief). So you are a Marathi Manoos first and wealth belonging to a state should first belong to the sons of the soil esp when there is so much poverty among marathi manoos.Improvement of bihar/up is one part of the balance. Other pasrt is encouraging marathis moanoos jobs. If you think we are backward i am in the US where jobs are advertised per residency of a state eX "Only LOCAL Texans need apply". If unemployment can cause this shift in a first world country why not in India?
